my little silver maple grew a lot this year and looked healthy all summer, but with all the leaves I did not notice this little clump of shoots at the tip, till the leaves fell. usually the leader has just one tip but this fall it has about six and they are so close together, so I am wondering, will it be fine or do i need to trim some off?

Is it on the central leader? If so I'd trim off all but one, the most straight one going up.

yes, they are on the central leader, that is why i was concerned, would now be the best time to prune them?

should be fine, just avoid pruning during temperature extreems, to avoid sun scald or frost crack. it should be fine to subordinate them now. silver maples are notorious for having codominant stemmed leaders, and splitting out so use some discretion when choosing a healthy strong lead Last edited by Alex Metzler; 17th December 2011 at 07:33 AM. |
