Hi Louise, I also live in the UK. I have had the same thing happen to my Eucalyptus tree and while searching on the internet for answers came across your post. Not wishing to give you false hope but I was told my tree was dead due to our very cold winter this year however just as I had arranged to have it cut down a visitor to our house noticed it had begun to sprout green leaves all down the main trunk. These leaves are a different shape to the original and not on all branches but it may be worth leaving the cutting down of your tree for a few months just in case. Like you I am very attached to my tree and was heart broken at the thought of having it cut down. Hope all goes well for you.
