Default Mulch mat damage

I have some 25 year-old pine trees that were planted using non-biodegradable, porous plastic mulch-matting that was never removed. In some cases, the trees have started to 'swallow up' the plastic.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder what level of damage would be caused to structural integrity and whether pathogen attack would be more likely.

Any thoughts?
