G'day to the fine tree people in Australia. I have questions about peppercorn trees, in particular the African variety. I have a massive and truly handsome specimen in my garden - two metre diameter trunk, probably 100-120 years old. I love it dearly. It is the periodic home of a pair of owls, barbets (woodpeckers) a few weavers and some louries. The problem is the root structure. It's so invasive and is causing some damage to plumbing and draining pipes, lifting brick/concrete foot baths and, I'm sure, not doing much good to the foundations. What I'd like to know is how to control the roots and which ones I can cut, how deep they go (are they more on the surface), which ones to cut and, those I do, how can I stop them from re-growing; if I do cut do I risk destablilising the tree and/or killing it? I really want to keep it. Any advice would be surely welcomed. Tom |
