Default monterey cypress

I am wondering if there is any interesting history around the Monterey cypress trees. They were removed by P.G. & E about 2- 3 years ago. I cannot remember the reason behind it. But I had heard something about some rare salamanders that lived among them that were disturbed because of it. does this ring a bell for anyone. Just curious, because i have some of these cypress trees and wanted to know. I am in Auburn, Ca.

Welcome to Treeworld!

Are you looking for reasons to preserve the trees?

Salamanders have been found by big tree climbers/measurers, in big hollows. This has led some to suggest some very harsh pruning just to create more habitat.

I do not think they are endangered.

have not heard of salamanders being host specific.

Auburn is located outside the natural historical range of Monterey cypress (which is only found around Big Sur) therefore, the cypress trees removed would have been planted as ornamentals and would not have closely evolved salamanders.
