Default Mishap with nails in tree

Greetings,

Over the weekend I completed a removal project. Wanted to share something I thought was rather amazing.

What are the chances of selecting the exact spot where someone in the past hung a birdhouse w/ Nails to make a cut.

I split the nails in half. I was not aware until after I made the cut what had occurred. I had ear plus in and could not hear it happing, although I did feel in the saw a disruption while cutting but "assumed" it was some harder wood I encountered in the cut.(which no one should ever do cuz we all know what happens when whe do ... ass\u\me)

also please find pic#3814. Thought it was a pretty cool pic.

Disected it well righ along the highly improbable axis. Chances of aiming and getting that one are low let alone just doing it.

Get lots of that here too, chews the chain out, I look for them but they can be embedded too.

When you feel that "rattle" on the saw stop and check or select a new spot.

We get a lot of star pickets and rreo rod in the lower stump as people used them as stakes to hold the juvenile tree up but never removed them.

Its more common in the valley where we live in the country, due to more old fences nailed against trees years ago.

Not as common in the city, but very often, its not a hard guess to know which tree in a backyard was a likely specimen for a child's treehouse.

Tommy, a man that mills lumber down the street - small operation - uses a metal detector on logs before sending them through his machine.

Odds are, that an arborist could check a 36" diameter trunk upwards of 10' high to ground level in less than a minute with a better quality mineral / metal detector.

Trees right at the front of a property, especially on a corner, have often had for sale signs on them. The most common backyard trees around here for nails etc are Coral, Camphor Laurel and Ficus. nice and soft to nail and good structure for tree house.
Have hit many funny things grown into trees. Horse reins and bit, car roof rack, axe head, bottles, water pipe (same reason as ekka's star pickets), scaffold bracket, insulators, etc. etc.

Bugger, I got chain wire fence today ... was doing a fenceline clear/stump grind for new one and the old was chainwire mesh 3' high crap.

Thought I cleared all OK but a section was "swallowed and I got it. Made sure didn't chip it though.

So you didn't buy a metal detector yet?

I didn't mention it just for fun

You are a lucky fellow! I have heard of all sorts extremely bloody accidents associated with running into foreign objects when using a chainsaw on a tree.

This really happens that often? I find that pretty surprising, I guess you really were lucky then!

The best/strangest thing i've hit was a set of old handcuffs that where imbedded in poinciana at the old Cleveland Police Station (circ 1800s)

Had plenty of hammer heads, axe heads and chains over the years.

I hit an old dogs bone once, it buggered a damn good 30'' chain stripped all the chrome off one side, the moral of my story is 'when I say the stump is cut low enough its damn well low enough' [multi stemmed horse chestnut]

I used to be an EMT, so every time there was an accident like this, which would be unusual to many, was frequently the reason I had a job! Those I did see personally were always talked about at shift changes or breaks.
