Dear BlackMoses I am shocked. using Mesquite and propogate in the same sentence here in Australia. Them's close to fighting words where I'm from. For those that don't know, Mesquite is in Australia's top 20 Weeds of National Significance. The WONS list. In past years I had been employed to do serious battle with 7 of the WONS so haven't a particularly high regard to growing any more of them, especially not the prickly ones. They can really be a pain to remove in some places. ![]() Guess you have your reasons, so good luck with it. RM |

I am surprised it cannot be found ,if it is such a bad problem. I was not aware the weed aspect of it. May be better to buy the chips from the states? | |

I say get a grant to remove them and sell the chips! Production of wood-chips from mesquite is currently being considered by private interests in north Queensland (P. James, pers. comm.). Proponents of commercialisation argue that harvesting could help remove large infestations. A way to make money and save your homeland. |

we have alot of mesquite trees here verrrrry messy trees. ill share some of my knowledge with you. they have very large tap roots and tend to draw the water away from other trees and plants around them some if your gonna grow mesquite dont plant anything nearby or they will compete until the mesquite finally wins. they are very wind and drought tolerant and tend to grow in places where other trees will not like salty beach environments. mesquit, like hard soils and tend to uproot in saturated wet soils so be careful if your in the tropics or monsoon prone. now on to pruning. they dont respond well to heavy pruning and will sucker like crazy so be careful with how much is pruned off at any given time. also, they compartmentalize very slow and often very poorly but its saving grace is the super dense heart wood which doesnt really rot super fast but thats no excuse for bad pruning cuts. anymore questions feel free to PM me
