Default Melaleuca problem

I live on the Gold Coast Australia and have this really nice paperbark tree. I produces a mass of flowers but when the leaves come on they quickly gets these brown spots. What is it and how can I fix it?

Hi Manny,

Welcome to Treeworld, Manny you need to upload your pictures to Treeworlds server...also you need to familiarise your self with our rules.

Rule 3.1:- Image, document hosting etc is to be on TreeWorld for the sake of preservation. The disappearance of images etc could ruin threads and posts over time plus it's easy to upload them. Be aware of image sizes, generally anything over 750px wide and 100kb in size will pose a problem for many users on slow connections or small screen resolutions. If images linked from other sources appear on the forums Tree World has the rights to copy and load the image to it's own server.

and how to do this: How to post| add a picture or file| embed picture

You need to get a really good magnifying glass and have a closer look.

Could be scale/bugs/mites/fungi/bacteria etc .....

It does look like a mite problem and under magnifying glass it looks like that too. So how do I fix it?

I would suggest a systemic pesticide that contains imidicloprid.

Thankyou I will try that and let you know how I go. I assume I have to treat the whole tree which is quite large.

Hiya - I'm new here too. Have a similar problem with my little melaleuca - it's only two feet tall (yes, I'm an oldie and still using measurements that I can recognise) and most of the leaves have that brown scaley thingy on them. Will try confidor when I can get out to the poor little thing through the water and slush. Will this continued rain and wet feet affect my poor baby?

Also white oil is good to kill scale, follow directions on bottle. Hard to kill them with confidor.

Never forget there are many green options we can use to target pests.

Sometimes the good bugs simply take out the bad. Chemicals often take out more than just the target organism. Chemicals should be the last option after absolutely definite identification and all factors considered ie human and enviro safety and climatic conditions etc.

White oil (as already mentioned), soapy water, predatory bugs all work well. Large scale such as white wax scale can be easily removed by hand - I had my daughter trained to this at 4 years old, she thought it was great fun.

Ok tried quite a few things and the amount of spots has significantly reduced but not completely gone which is good and it looks healthier. I ended up mostly with the greener option of a chilli spray.
Now I've got mites on the stems of my little olive trees which are only 1 metre tall in pots. Chilli spray and confidor not working.
Thanks for everyones help.

products derived from neem oil are often very good against mites and you can usually use them in conjunction with pest oil to make them even more effective.

The rose gun works real well. The best answer so far. Thanks for that. Still have a few mites around but almost got em all.
The melaleuca now looks so healthy and the olive trees have great new foliage and the branches are almost free of mites so look great.
Thanks everyone
Amanda
