Our 2ft diameter 50ft white pine tree was hit by lightning. It blew a 4 inch wide strip off the tree down to the wood. The wood also seems to have a crack that is not open. Is there some way we can protect this injury? Marda |

I agree with Glennak. Painting or filling the crack does not benefit the tree. Try to probe the depth of the crack - many times it only goes in a few inches, and the tree will survive. IF the crack goes more than halfway through the trunk, have a tree professional assess its safety.
