We had a maple tree in our backyard that had suffered a lightening strike many years back with a resultant center crack. Large mushrooms grew in the V of the tree. The last nor'easter (March, 2010) took down one side of the tree, leaving it unstable. We were advised to take down the rest of the tree, which we did. The remaining tree stump is now exuding yellow-orange gook. Do you know what this exudate is or what we should do (if anything) about it? Tree stumps |

It's one of several saprophytes that are helping to degrade the stump back into soil. A stump grinder will dispatch the stump right away and grass can re-grow over the area in a single season if desired. You can rent one and do it yourself or have any local tree company do it for you. |
