Default Maple tree bark falling off

Tree located 10 feet off lake, with very full canopy, due to good sun reflecting from lake. Indiana, USA. Used as shade, and with a hammock hung around it.

Bark is coming off in big slabs this year. Notice two lines left by some insects.

Wanted to know if spraying for insects is recommended.
Would wrapping the tree with plastic ground barrier help?
and/or Painting the tree with some barrier like driverway sealer?

Thanks

The tree looks a lot like Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum). Painting the tree or wrapping the trunk or ground with plastic makes you feel good - you did something. Doesn't help the tree at all. The base of the trunk suggests the tree is not getting enough water, possible root strangulation. Can be corrected, but tedious job, so costs $$$. Not addressing the problem ensures the tree dies,.

Looks like victim of grade change too, that trunk has no flare, collar rot.

The round hole wounds in a line is sapsuckers (woodpeckers).
