Hi, we have a 1.5 year old Autumn maple tree that was doing fine last year. This year we see that while many new leaves came out, there is a big part of the center of the tree with branches with no trees. After closer investigation I can see many strange growth on the bark of the effected branches as well as the trunk. Searching the web I can't find anything like it. There are actually a couple types of growth or fungus on the bark. We are in Chicago suburbs. I have uploaded a few pictures to help with identification. Maple Thank you very much for your help Regards Darius |

Looks like some sort of scale crap ... try hort oil (white oil). The oil coats the buggers and they suffocate, gently hose off a few days after. Just read the label on the stuff.

Thank you much for such a quick reply. Should I consider the effected leafless benches as dead and cut them off or is there a chance they will still produce leafs? The few I trimmed, still looked alive inside. Thank you Darius |

Not yet, some might resprout. Just kill the bugs at this stage, it'll take a few months to see what lives and dies as far as the tree's canopy is concerned.

So these would be bugs under the growth spots? I was thinking it was bugs right under the thin layer of the bark. Thank you |
