Default maple leaves curling

last year a maple tree started to grow i the corner of my yard, we were planning on planting a tree there anyway so i thought what the heck i'll just let it go. now ti is growing good but i just noticed that the leaves on top of the little guy (about 2 feet tall) are turing yellow and curling up. the leaves on the bottom are nice and green and full, what would be causing this?

I live outside of minneapolis MN, we have had normal weather this year, not too dry and not too wet.

your thoughts?

Have you fertilized the yard beneath the tree? If so, with what?
