We have a Magnolia tree about 5' from the foundation of our 2 story house that is now taller than the house. We would like to trim or top it but are hesitant because we were told that doing so would make the roots spread out rather than go downward and possibly damage our foundation. Is that so?

What sort of Magnolia? Do you have some pics? What are the foundations of the house from? Is RCB - Root Controls Barrier an option? |

And what kind of soil do you have.? 5 feet is really too close to the house for almost any tree.
