Unhappy leyland cypress pruned too much

We recently had our two Leyland Cypress trees pruned and it looks like the pruner took off way too much tree. The trees were topped as they were more than 30 feet tall and were over the roof of our house and banged against the roof and wall on a windy day. The pruner also took off most of the branches leaving only a few random branches. Will the trees generate new branches and greenery, or will these trees die? How much can these trees be pruned? My wife and I are worried that our once beautiful trees will now die. Please help us understand the amount of pruning these trees can tolerate and what we can do to encourage the trees to grow new foliage and recover.

They do look sparse. Generally no more than 30% of the foliage is removed in a given year., Be sure the tree gets enough water, and an application of liquid seaweed should help, and then wait and see how it goes. If the trees are strong, they should recover.

However, if the branches were overhanging the roof and banging on the walls, this says the tree was planted too close to the building, and another tree should really be planted further away, and the present one removed once the 2nd one is well established.
