i live outside chicago,il and have white pines. the soil has a lot of clay with a ph level over 7. what can i use to make the ph level more acid and fertilize. i also have cannan firs with mites , what should i use for the mites and fertilizer. |

soil amendment is difficult and temporary. Plant what will grow in the sweet soil you have. Call your local extention office for the best way to handle the mites and fertilizing. ![]() |

You add sulphur (sulfur), mix powder in watering can, water in well. Makes pH go down which is more acidic, follow instructions on the packet.

You could also dig in some acidic mulch -- like rotted pine needles, and not clean up the needles that do fall. ALthough pines seem to grow best in acidic soil (prob an offshoot of rotting needles) they also tolerate clay soils - they just never achieve the really healthy look of growing in acidic sands. The mites can best be treated with a miticide - but usually by the time you can identify the mites are present it is almost too late to do anything about them, Fertilizer - bonemeal, bloodmeal, potash and liquid seaweed or kelp.
