i have a 3 year old silver maple, an i noticed the terminal buds on most the main branches , the leaves on these wilted and turned black, so i cut open a stem and found a little whitish caterpillar looking thing in the middle of the stem, so i cut off all the affected stems back to healthy tissue, and burned the caterpillars, will the tree regrow new stems? i'm worried as one was the main stem of the tree and i'm wondering if it will grow straight now, and also how should i prevent these bugs from coming back again?

It should regrow but form might be an issue to rectify. Spray the tree with Merit for caterpillars, borers etc.

Merit® mixed with a little water soluble fertilizer poured around the base of the tree will allow the material to be absorbed and prevent further insect problems for this growing season. The fertilizer will get the product into the tree much faster than simply applying it by itself to the soil. You might also want to re-think the type of tree. SLM has a great number of insect predators as well as other problems with structure and longevity. |
