Hi folks, I'm new to the forum. Over the past few weeks I have noticed my maple tree has been shedding black leaves. Yesterday, I took greater notice that the peripheral leaves were yellowing, and the top branches were becoming bare. I planted three maples six years ago, and they have all done very well until this issue came up within the past month. All have experienced great growth and color in the fall. There is adequate drainage, and the tree gets plenty of water. I don't know what the problem is. I have attached two photos. The first is a picture of the leaves. The blackish dying leaf is one that had already fallen off. The green leaf is a sample plucked from near the trunk of the tree, and the yellowish leaf is a sample taken from the furthest point on the branch. ![]() The second photo is of the tree itself. You can see near the top where the branches are shedding leaves. Any help is appreciated! |

Yellowing but green veins. Likely a pH issue, check pH and modify so it is around 6 The blackening of leaves could also be soil too wet, check moisture, dig a small hole 1' deep and see what it is like. Then to green up, chelated iron, follow directions on packet, pH has to be correct first.

The blackened leaf also suggests the possibility of Verticillium Wilt VERTICILLIUM WILT OF MAPLE - University of Guelph
