Hi guys.. first post. First I'll say I love trees, but this palm.. I hate it; its an ugly bat/roach/squirrel infested, leaf dropping, noisy tree... yes noisy because the pests run around in it and it drive me crazy when I'm in my driveway. I wish it would drop dead. Now.. saying that; what the heck kind of palm is it. I'm thinking its a washington/fan palm that has been mistreated and is all mangy, but the trunk is so darn ugly I'm not sure... ![]() This next one I can't find in my north-american tree guide so I guess my neighbor went out of his way to put some exotic annoyance next to me: it fruits & flowers (all pretty like).. but I dont think the fruit is edible.... unlike the banana and grapefruit also hanging over the fence next to it, which is also next to the palm... geez ![]() ![]() ![]() any ideas? |

Someone will surely be along with more sound info, as not much of them in Scotland... No idea what the palm is. Flower looks like it belongs to shrub, Hibiscus - rosa - sinensis, something that grows alright in conservertries over here. And the fruit looks like Lime (Citrus aurantifolia), but i am not familiar with their leaves or form so unsure..?

Palm - Washingtonia (?) ask him to get it trimmed; Excuse? they can be a fire hazard, harbor pests (ants, roaches, rabid squirrels....) Flower - Hibiscus Fruit - rind looks like lime, but I don't see any thorns on the branches. Pull a fruit and cut it open. Could be immature citrus of some kind, all the fruits start out green. I don't think its a pomegranate. Pom leaves are narrower and shiny. is this what the flowers looked like? Also do you remember the smell? Most citrus smell quite strongly when they flower.

I'm not a tree expert at all, but the fruit, to me, looks like a nut (black walnut, in my opinion), but I'm not sure if black walnuts grow in that area The tree I don't think is a lime, the leaves aren't the same as leaves from a lime tree (lime leaves are more round). They look abit close to orange trees, I guess |

| Yep, finally asked my neighbor...its guava. Amazingly, hurricane Ike left all my neighbors and my trees intact. There is no hope of me getting a certified arborist to my house anytime soon with all the tree work in Houston. They have sent in fleets of "tree service" people from other states in convoys of bucket trucks... I cant wait to see the hacking they do... |
