My boyfriend planted the packing material they came with (sawdust) in with bare root fruit trees last week. So, there is sawdust packed around the roots under the soil and mulch. I am new to tree planting, but suspect the sawdust will immobilize nitrogen or rot near the roots. First, will it cause a problem/ does it need to be removed? Second, any recommendations for minimal damage to the tree? Thank you so much for any advice, Brittany |

The simplest solution is to dig up the trees, remove as much sawdust as possible, add in some bloodmeal to help break down remaining sawdust, and replant the trees, Sawdust eventually returns extra nitrogen to the soil, but initially requires nitrogen to break it down. Also generates a lot of heat in the initial stages. The trees haven't been in long, so they shouldn't suffer being dug up and replanted, as long as the ground hasn't frozen.
