Default How do I move a tree

I have a silver maple that grew from a seed in a flower garden. The tree is a year old now and about 5 feet tall. When is the best time to move it and how can I tell how big the roots have gotten.

Default Re: How do I move a tree

Dig it up (preferably not within 6 weeks of frost, and if you do move it this fall, stake it for the winter), if you cut thru roots, they were bigger than the hole (come out about 8 inches from the stem for a one year old tree - there should be no problems), move to another location, presoaking the soil of the new hole, and the ground of the existing location before moving.

Appreciate that Silver Maples are relatively short lived 80-120 years, and in that time can reach 100-120 feet tall, a crown spread of 80 to 100 feet, and trunk diameters of 3 to 6 feet. Plant it nowhere near the house or any other building (or fences), and it will still provide a steady supply of shade after about 15 years. Good Luck.

And the longer you wait, the harder it will be to replant and re-establish the tree.
