2 1/2 years ago,it was all i could think about,6 months later i quit my job at a mobile home sales and service center, and dove into self employment, kinda rough at first and now staying fairly busy, got a couple of people who own several rental properties and i'm the only tree guy they'll hire.I'm fixing to teach my brother the risks and rewards of climbing, get him into it and maybe he'll make a career out of it.At least hes getting a mentor,i got a book, a hank of lowes rope, and a shit harness to start off with. i'm also working on going for my isa climber specalist certificate in january[only time they'll be close to me=(].If you were thinking of going for an apprenticship,i'd suggest staying down south, around here i'm the only tree guy who doesn't top,or completly butcher trees.

hey newguy..

can u elaborate on the startbig of how you got started ?

did you just buy the gear and a book and self-teach ?

I'm in north qld australia and can't find anywhere/one to teach me how to climb trees ... so I may just go down the self-teach path

some good advice for beginners has been "go SLOW and LOW"

what'd'ya'reckon

I'm in Cardwell... halfway between Cairns and Townsville !

do you have contact details ?

I'm not actually looking to get into arborist work ... but rather studying the rainforest canopy eco-system

Well for starters, buy the tree climbers companion and the fundametals of general treework. They can be found here,A Tree Story: books and videos by Gerald F Beranek ireally recomend having someone teach you, because nothing ca be of more benifit to a newbie than an experianced climber showing you up close and personal all the tricks and skills required in treework.Yes i just bought gear and taught myself,i don't recomend it.

I started dragging brush and thought climbers were crazy...now it seems more crazy to me to be on the ground.

If you want to climb, study 100yrs. worth of it and start rock climbing.

I climb totally different since I started rockin'.

Alot of modern tree climbing "borrows" from rock climbing discipline.

Makes climbing trees a cake walk.
