Holes in my Birch tree

Just got done putting up some Christmas lights - saw these holes in the bark of my Birch tree. Can you help me? What are they, and how do I kill what's making them? I attached a picture (I think). Thank you.

Thank you, there are several of these groupings, along the trunk and on the branches...should i be concerned about the health of the tree? should I do anything to the holes?

The biggest problem you will have is the sapsucker returning and making more holes, Enough holes encircling the trunk can harm the tree. Don't worry about the ones that are there. If you are worried about it, you could try adding some bleach to the holes that are there - might make the sap taste bad enough the bird will go elsewhere. lol
