Default hole at bottom of trunk

I have a 50 or 60 foot large tree in my backyard with a hole at the base about 10 by 12 ins. and there is always wood , like sawdust falling down in this hole. I clean it out and the next time I look at it there is new shavings there. I saw black ants going in the hole and put ant dust all around . Now I don't see the ants in the hole but they still crawel up and down the tree. Is there anyway to kill the ants or I was wondering can I cement up the hole? I'm afraid they are weaking the tree and its going to fall over on my house.Any info would be helpful, Thanks, Jerry

Hi Jerry and welcome.

Lets take a couple small steps first before we try to kill everything around the tree.

Do you know what sort of tree it is?

Where do you live?

Is it possible you can load some pics up, overall tree, trunk area where cavity is and a distance shot so we see the landscape around the tree.

Also, is there any unusual mushroom looking things around, either on the trunk, root flare etc?

Generally, black ants dont do much. But lets see what you have, pics would be the best.

Hello Jerry, even if you can't give us the photos tell us some of the answers to those questions that the photos would have provided, the more info you give us the better able we are to give relevant answers to you.

Hi , I measured the with of the tree and is 6 feet around, I dont know what kind it is but it gets a bud that turns into a yellow flower before the leaves come out. I live in southeastern Pa. USA. The hole is 4ins wide by 7ins high. I put paper at the hole yesterday and today there are new shavings. I also can strick my hand up the hole about a foot and its moist decaying wood. Thanks for any help. Jerry

Jerry, none of the things you've said make me feel good about your tree. Its not an insignificant size, and sounds like it has a major defect at the base. Really the best advice I can give you is to have a qualified Arborist inspect the tree on site, and yes you'll probably have to pay for that. Tof find one and to have a chat on the phone visit this site http://www.isa-arbor.com/findArborist/findarborist.aspx type in your state abbreviation and read down the list of Certified Arborists in your area, you can use the city location too, further down the page.

Having someone on site from your area is the best course of action in this instance.
