Default help with young pin oak!

Help please.

My daughter and I planted and little sapling (about 6-8 inches then) pin oak about 3 years ago. Well early this spring (before any leaves we on any trees yet) high winds broke the top/leader out of it. It was about 4 feet tall, but now is about 3 ft tall. I trimmed its down to just about the last/highest ring. Its grow feircly and ALL limbs are growing, full of leaves. BUT there is no leader now, and seems to be no sign of one trying to come out trough the top. My question is should I just let it go a grow, however it may turn out?? Or is it pointless to let it grow with no leader growing?? I can get a few pics this weekend and let you guys see. Id hate to take it out, but if its not going to grow right I will. I was soooooo sick when I seen it broke!

Pics will help, but if it was taking back to a proper node[called a crown reduction,do not confuse that with topping]then it should be fine.

thanks, I will snap some pictures saturday.

I dont know if I understand the "node" comment.

The top broke out of it, right about the top "ring" of branches. I just trimmed it alittle bit more to make the break a clean cut......

pics coming

A node is a leader or limb that when doing a crown reduction your suppose to cut back to,that way the chosen leader will assume the role of the leader.

Looks like you can train a new leader, just select the healthiest, most vertical secondary stem; prop it up with a stick and stretchy tape and subordinate the other four secondarys to regain apical dominance.

I think the tree will be fine, the damage was done very early in its life,by the time it gets to full maturity, another node will take over, plus the tree will occlude over the wound just fine.

Looks like it should come away no problem. I reckon leave it be and keep up the staking ready for a natural leader to come through.

Yep,maybe a little mulch around the base, just for moisture retention and to prevent root compaction.
