I recently bought a house in Sring, Texas USA (35 miles north of Houston) with an apartment complex situated directly behind it. I have a 10' fence, but would like to add a few trees in the back to help add a little bit of privacy and some shade. My backyard is relatively small , approximately 40' from my back door to my back fence and 50' wide. The land that the neighborhood is built on used to be farm land, but was built up for the construction of the neighborhood with sand/clay. Sorry I don't have any thechnical data on the soil. I am thinking of putting a tree in both of the back corners (NE and SE coners of my property)near the fence, and I would like some suggestions from the experts. Live oaks are popular here, but I think that they maybe too big for my space. Fruit trees would be nice, but I would like something that grows relatively fast. Thanks Todd |

You want fast, how tall do want the tree to grow to, what fruit can you tolerate, and how much shade do you want, and intensity of shade?

Shrubs amy be a better bet near the fence. "Pride of Houston" yaupon would be a good place to start. A small tree closer to the house will give you the privacy you seek faster. Go to : Texas Tree Selector for more ideas. |

HI, I live out of Adelaide, South Australia, similar climate, I can supply you with a list of unfailing low water use small trees or large shrubs. What is your favourite leaf colour?, do you want deciduous or evergreen? and will the plants be irrigated by drippers until established? Cath.
