Shonda, I am pretty certian they are NOT blueberries. The blueberry fruit has a tuft on the bottom of the fruit. I'll keep looking.

I know. I thought they only grew in bushes. But the blueberry is the only thing I could compare it to.

Japanese Blueberry? Elaeocarpus Decipiens? 30-60 ft tall? Can't seem to find a picture of fruit anywhere other than what you posted.

http://thebegavalley.org.au/uploads/...vet_fruits.jpg

Looks a lot like Broad-Leaf Privet to me.....
The leaves, when crushed, are quite brittle so they "crack" rather than bruise...and smell a bit like lawn clippings..... (opposite leaf arrangement)
The Privet is a weed here in Australia...Ligustrum lucidum...originally from China.

I reckon Azrael nailed it.

we dont have much of it here and the ones I've cut didn't have berries, generally like tall busy bushes here.

That stuff is everywhere around here, get rid of it quick or they'll come up everywhere once the seeds drop. Used as a hedge it's good but once it seeds it comes up everywhere.

I'll get some before & after shots of the creek near here next week. Azrael should like them.

This is Quarry Branch Creek, at Northmead, it starts about 1km up from pic1, north side of the M2, joins Toongabbie Creek and then Parramatta River. Up from pic1 has had Broadleaf privet, lantana, etc removed. About 100 yards downstream is how it should look.

I know what that tree is. If it gets a a whole array of white soft-petal flowers in the spring and the bark resembles a flowering dogwood-it is definitely a virburnum prunifolium. Commonly called Blackhaw.
