Hi there, This is my first post so apologies as l'm not very experienced in the garden or forums and thanks - it's nice to have the chance to chat and benefit from some experienced advice. Which brings me to a question about my rear neighbors moreton bay fig - about 1mtr from our shared rear fence, apparently only half size and overhanging along 3/4 of the fence line, our grassed yard and washing line are littered with fruit, whole and excreted (yes bird n bat poop) and the yard is not a safe place for our 3 yo, or anyone/thing else. Whilst the ground seems to be undulating more than when we moved in five years ago there's no evidence of roots above ground in our yard. Any ideas on managing the tree, including it's continuing expansion, so we can use our yard and potentially protect our drainage/home? Thanks so much! Jennifer1 |

Very tough situation, especially if your neighbour doesn't care. Root barrier could control roots but if the tree is that close to the fence line you'll have to put the barrier further away, trees need roots for anchorage and you best not cut any too close. Pruning back to the fence line might be an option but it will have to be repeated and likely you will need some co-operation. Then there's the new rules. Sounds like the best option is to talk to the neighbour and hope they are reasonable about the problem.
