I'm glad to find a site where so many people care about trees, and are willing to share what they know. It looks like a great site. I live near Monterey, California, and I have ten mature coast live oaks (quercus agrifolia) that aren't doing all that well. I'd hate to see them die. The neighborhood has a LOT of sickly, dying, and dead oak trees this year, a lot more than usual. You ask ten people what should be done, and you get at least seven different recommendations, including leaving the trees alone. Does anybody know much about treatment for diseases of coast live oak? Or California oaks generally? The biggest threat seems to be oak root fungus (armillaria mellea, however it's spelled), which has no actual cure--only a wellness program. But there are other issues. Fortunately, I haven't seen sudden oak death anywhere close. If anyone is knowledgable on the topic, I'd love to tell you the details. Thanks, Peter Last edited by Jeff Darby; 12th February 2010 at 06:45 PM. Reason: moved to appropriate forum |
