I have a tree growing in my yard and I am unsure as to what type it is. It resembles a Mimosa but instead of having a pink flower, it has a yellow flower. It has "pods" like a Mimosa but the fern like leaves are a little different. Are there different types of Mimosa or is this a different kind of tree altogether? This may be a stupid question but I am new to identifying different trees/plants and any help would be greatly appreciated!

It is at least in the same family, which is characterized by the bean pod. This is a very large plant family. A couple possibilities are whitethorn acacia, Acacia constricta Benth., and honeylocust, Gleditsia triacanthos L., both of which are at least reported in your area (VA, MD, and US SW for the former and all except the NW US for the later). Both of these have thorns although thornless forms of the later are commonly planted. Beyond that I'm not aware of anything else hardy enough for your area that could have been planted.

Thank you so much. That actually answers another question I had but hadnt posted yet. We do have a few trees with very large thorns, I am pretty sure they are locust. And since these little guys are close to those trees, I have a feeling they are the same type. I love Mimosa's but dont have much luck getting them to grow. I transplanted one recently that my Dad brought home to me and it is doing well, so I am keeping my fingers crossed! But I noticed the ones I asked about back in the woods and was hoping they too were in the same family, but now I dont think they are. I will try to upload some pics so you can view and see if they are actually locust. My only other question is do locust have the little seed pods too? |

OMG, I'm sorry. When I reread your post, i realized you stated the locust is part of the large family. |

The original Honey Locust has spikey thorns like Hawthorn, typically 2 1/2" - 3" long; Black Locust (unrelated to Honey Locust) has short rose-like thorns. You are most likely to have the Honey Locust species - but need pics to know.
