Default Growth on my Trees

I live in Central Illinois and I have this growth on my trees which is mostly maples. Can someone help me identify it, what damage it can do if it is bad, and how to treat it?

Thanks in advance!

The light green stuff is Lichen kinda of a moss no issue for your tree the other me thinks is ridge bark pushed up by the tree,s growth in the crotch of the limb union again not an issue and not related to the lichen.

What are Lichens

V and U shaped Crotch Strengths, included bark| codominant stems etc

Yeah I reckon check out that crotch carefully, 360 degree pics.

Lichens seldom grow where there's pollution.

I guess we have different kinds of Lichen in Toronto, Eric. We have pollution, and a great many trees harbour lichen. It is as if they like the minerals available.,

I was under the impression if lichen covers a significant portion of the tree, perhaps 25-50%, the lichen will minimize air exchange thru the bark, and tree health suffers. This being so, how can the lichen be removed from the bark without damaging the tree?

full pics would be more helpful, but from the looks of it your referring to the branch bark union, which commonly joins with included bark, and if so is not a biotic or abiotic injury, contusion or other, im lichen what im seeing here as far as growth
