I am interested in setting up a small scale, one or two man, portable saw mill in NZ and seeking advice; - How to identifying reliable clients ie, arboricultural service providers, farmers/landowners, developers/builders. - How existing millers operate. - Good areas for consistent work - The minimum standard of mill required for commercial operations from experience. Thanks |

Hi widowmaker, Where in the country are you setting up ? what is the purpose of the milling, for own use or slabs or lengths for sale? Most of the milling that I know of is small scale forestry or lines of macrocarpas etc. Depends on where and what sort of scale you are looking at, using milling is seen as a complementary business rather than a primary industry in that smaller scale. |

I am seeking advice about where may be good areas for milling but being a portable mill will give me the flexibility to move around. I imagine that I will compliment existing businesses like yourself milling the timber for the clients use. Otherwise I will have a storage facility whereby I can accumulate enough wood to sell. I am not looking to establish a huge commercial milling business I am interested in whether there is enough work to sustain a small one or two man enterprise. |
