Dying hemlock tree

Hi, I live in NC, My uncle has a tree in his yard that is dying. It looks like a ceader tree, but he thinks it may be a hemlock tree. It is around 45' tall. Around 2 years ago he added a LOT of dirt around the trees. Last year they started looking bad. They are still green but thinning a lot, and the very top of one is starting to die. Is there any way to save the trees. He Does not want to remove them if there is any way to save them. Please help.

some pictures would help, it sounds as if your dad has put the soil against the tree over the pot level, this will stifle the trees where did he get the soil from it could be a different ph level, did he drive over the roots and compact them these are just a few possible problems that you could have but pictures will help enormously.
