Planted two Dogwoods last year. Had rought winter with snow covering both for most of winter. One leafed out fine this spring, but the other did not leaf out and now where the trunk and limbs come together it is starting to sprout. Should we cut limps back to where new sprouts are or leave as it? |

leave it until its in full foliage. this way it will be easier to tell whats dead wood and whats un bloomed buds. id say give it until late summer to be extra sure. sometimes trees are late to open buds.

I would wait until early summer, and then remove any limbs that have not set leaves. Waiting until late summer-- early fall is just a waste of time IMHO.

could be suffering from Dogwood anthracnose, a disease of flowering and Pacific dogwood (Cornus florida and C. nuttallii). it can be brought on by a cold, wet spring and fall, or can occur throughout the growing season. winter stress and injury increase severity. Mulching trees can help to reduce h2o needs and protect trunks from mechanical injury. its possible to control the disease if diagnosed before extensive dieback occurs. Pruning can help rid the tree of diseased tissue and reduce potential sources of inoculum, but has proven ineffective or only slightly effective. if severe enough you could look into a fungicide treatment, systemic or foliar. to name a few: chlorothalonil, mancozeb, or mancozeb plus thiophanate-methyl and the systemic fungicides: propiconazole, tebuconazole, andtriforine are registered for control of dogwood anthracnose. |
