Question Dog stripped bark off tree

Hi,
My puppy stripped the bark about 3 feet long and 3-4 inches wide off the side
of an ornamental tree in our backyard. I'm concerned about the tree. Temporarily, I wound duct tape around the "scar". Do I need to get a certain kind of tree tape, or does anyone have any suggestions as to how to handle this? Thank you in advance.

  1. Pictures
  2. Preventative mesh around tree to stop recurrence
  3. Remove tape
  4. Try to paint with trichoderma (antagonistic fungi)
  5. Ensure tree is watered, mulched and stays healthy (do not fertilize)
  6. Buy dog more toys!

I have had good success with black plastic tied around the tree. Duct tape is probably good. If you can keep it hot and moist ie not let it dry out the cambium should regrow if there is any remaining on the exposed wood. Ignor any of the rubbish you read about cutting back to good bark and removing rough edges. Any bit that grows is good any bit that's loose tie or tape it back to the wood. Try and keep slugs and other things that eat the new growth out. Any bark that has been removed may re-connect with the trunk if it has not dried out. Bark graft is another option.

Thank you Ekka and Glennak for your ideas. I will give it a go and hope to save my beautiful tree.
