I have a maple tree that was ok last summer and this spring. We moved into the new house last July so the builder was done moving dirt by then. I noticed yesterday that the leaves were turning brown on the ends. I immediately dug excess dirt from around the base of the tree. It looked as though the bark had been damaged by the excess dirt. By removing the dirt, can you save the tree at this point??? Or is excess dirt around the base ir-reversible??

Pictures always help. Excess soil is always a problem. Exposing the area back to the sunlight will allow the tree to take care of the problem by itself. Removing just the soil around the trunk won't be enough Remove all of the excess fill soil all the way to the edges of the canopy. Removing it by hand is better than using heavy equipment. |

How big is the maple tree, and how deep is the extra soil above the original topsoil?
