Bought a dawn redwood tree about a month ago and it's leaves have slowly been getting browner (and it is late spring..) It is still fairly small. About 6 feet and very twiggy I bougt it in a burlap covered ball and removed the rope around it's neck before putting it in the ground of course. I don't know anything really about soil and indication of fertility/acidity But the soil here that it is in seems a little on the sandy side and the old pasture I have it in has alot of wormwood growing in it among many other weeds and grasses - and other trees we've got planted and growing well (mostly elm and a few maples) when I put it in I dug a broad and shallow hole (but enough to allow for water retension when all is buried) putting a thin layer of horse manuer and decomposed hay in before the tree. I was watering it almost every day with two gallon-buckets and making maybe 4 trips for this one tree, so roughly 8 gallons every couple days. After realizing I could be overwatering I went over it with the guy that owns the nursery and he told me to check moisture.. We concluded by deciding to remove thee soil covering the tree and poke holes in it's ball to let it dry for a week or two. After this it's leaves began to sprout a little faster and greener, but the browning did not completely stop. about a week later I decided the soil inside was dry enoughand recovered. Then bucketed in a few gallons. That was two days ago and today it does not look any better it actually looks a little worse. Weather: We have cloudless hot days and drizzly days in the same week as is usual spring behavior. We have had very cold strong winds most the time and almost always at least a dry breeze. I am beginning to think this could be the problem, but the nursery I got this redwood from is in the same area and claims the tree is hardy here. I am also considering pouring vinegar or something acidic into the water next time. Will take a picture and post it if I can Need advice on this one, I'm worried it might not last And frustrated I cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong. |
