Default damaged trunk on red maple, part of tree is dying.

This is my first time here, so here goes! My red maple tree, about 15 ft. tall, is damaged at the lower trunk. Looks like either insects, or damage in trimming grass. One part of it is dying. Is there anything I can do to save it?
It's one of my favorite trees and I would appreciate any ideas!
Thanks Dorothy
