Unhappy cryptomeria browning

we have 3 large 20 ft cryptos planted about 6 years ago. while we used to get some browning, it got progressively worse 2 years ago. our plant doctor told us it was mites and began spraying regularly. this year, the trees look about 35% brown and i'm afraid we may be losing them. the tree doctor blames it on the early cold weather and rain here in Westechester, NY this winter. they said they should recover in the spring. after 2 years of treatment and getting worse, i don't trust my guy anymore. Help please.

Are they close to a road or driveway? If so then road salt may be causing the problem, getting the soil test will confirm this.

Some pictures would be good, distance and close up.

If it is mites you should be able to tell, try a magnifying glass.

Most of the time these things are fungal.

Dry foliage is important, does the tree get sun in the morning etc? Check to see the corelation between the brown areas and sunlight etc.

Also agree with the soil thing, a start would be a pH test and perhaps a salinity/sodicity test.

Is this browning just in winter? If so, and if you have c. japonicum "elegans", it is normal.

Great Plant Picks
