Default Creative Uses for Wood Chips

Hello everyone here,

I'd like to ask the arborists for creative uses for wood chips. I had two trees removed and the piles of chips are beautiful; we wanted to keep them, figuring they were worth something.

I'd love to hear your suggestions, please, rather than google for ideas in search engines. I figure I can get the best ideas straight from the arborist's mouth. The guys who did our trees didn't seem very creative.

Thanks, all!

Could be used for mulching around other trees,or flowerbeds.Could also spread it around a dirt drive way to fill in holes.

Mulch is prob the best bet but not advised to put down fresh as i think they will draw too much Nitrogen from the soil. Let the weather in at them for a couple of months. Crash mats for childrens play area. Supply to horse riding stables.

I thought the nitrogen pull was kind of myth .I cant see it hurting tree and shrubs .Just use a lot of them they break down fast also keep away from the stems as you would with any mulch you use .I wish there was some way to heat a house by burning chips that would be nice.

The idea that mulch will pull nitrogen out of the soil is largely a myth.

#1) Do a soil test first and you're likely to find no nitrogen to start with
#2) Chips in the back of my truck heat up in less than an hour - why? Because they are loaded with nitrogen and begin composting right away.
#3) Drawing nitrogen from the soil? Even if this were true, would it not put the nitrogen right back into the soil as it decomposed?

In truth, nitrogen is very volatile and is taken up as quickly as a tree can find it.

If you are applying saw dust from wood dried to 6 to 8%, you might cause a little nitrogen fixation but only to the extent that nitrogen was there in the first place.

All of the above suggestions are good. We also use mulch as animal bedding and use it for jogging trails as well.

Construction sites use mulch in large quantities to minimize soil compaction.

I have put my own woodchip mulch around all my gardens, vege's ,fruit tree's ect straight off the back of the truck. We had no worms about three to four months ago and now the soil is loaded with them. All of the trees are doing better and moister that it keeps in is great.
Just keep it away from the trunks when fresh, and i always water it straight after putting it out.You will find the leafer the mulch the better.

Tried filling the holes in the driveway with them, not successful.Washed away, and what stayed there held the water and the holes got deeper.

Treespecialist, I think it depends on the type of mulch. The several yrs I was involved in revegetation projects we conducted soil testing. We found that aspen erosion matting (Curlex) and coconut fiber did alter the C-N cycle, consequently depriving the seedlings of essential nutrients. Whereas, straw matting did not. Some fibers are more resistant to decomposition than others.
