Default Creaking sound from tree

I have a large maple tree next to my house that will occassionally make a creaking sound - usually when it's windy. Is this normal or do I need to be concerned?

I looked at it and can't see any signs that it's damaged or dying...

Creaking in trees is usually from rubbing wood.

Scan the tree over and see if there's any branches rubbing or branches rubbing on structures.

Failing that then check to see if any of the forks (crotches) have evidence of cracking or splitting, this may have to be done by going up the tree.... perhaps best to have an arborist look it over.

The tree out the front of my flat creaks badly in the wind too but i always assumed it was natural. Now I think I'll have it checked out.

Ninikins crossing and rubbing branches are natural within the branch architecture of all healthy trees, sure get any large significant tree on your property looked at by a qualified arborist, that makes good sense but don't fear your tree because it creaks.

Thanks for the advice, sean. I'm really not very knowledgable about trees but I don't really see anything rubbing and it IS a really large tree. I'll definitely keep an eye on it at the very least.

You guys with the creaking trees,

Dont worry to much,

thats the sort of tree they use to make wooden boats with.

My advice,

call your nearest shipbuilder.
