Hi All, I have two Alexander palms - about 6m tall, foliage included. After Black Saturday last year they seemed to have been burnt by the wind / heat, it looked like someone had held a blow torch just to a strip on one side. Shortly after cracks appeared in the trunk. The cracks are no more than a centimetre wide and don't run the whole length of the trunk, maybe a metre or slightly more in the at about 3 metres up. The burnt fronds have since dropped and the top of the trees are both green again. My concern is that I was told by a friend that palm trees take ages to die and that just because they have put on a few leaves doesn't mean they are ok. Could someone tell me - is a cracked trunk fatal? Should I be filling the gap / void to stop insects etc. getting in? Advanced trees are so expensive to bring in I'd really like to save the ones I have if I can. Thanks. |
