Default cottonwood strange growth

while inspecting my trees today i noticed a strange growth on the bark of my cottonwood tree, then i noticed the above growth was growing funny and dieing. what is this growth and is there any way to save this tree?. the first picture is of the growth on the bark, the next two are of the growth of the leaves and stems above the bark growth. the last picture is of the growth relative to the top of the tree.I hope i can save this tree as i grew it from a seed and it is only five years old

My guess is canker on the bark. The one blackened leaf may be poplar shoot blight. Not much you can do. If canker causes death the that branch you will have to prune it out.

Poplars are susceptible to a lot of diseases, and Canker is quite common - best to remove the branch if you are concerned about it -- if not, leave it and it will slowly spread to the rest of the tree and result in a shorter life for the tree.

Cut off the shoot below the canker, and one (or more) of the sideshoots will take over as leader. to be safe, paint 50% bleach and water (1:1) on the remaining stem cut, and on the tool used to do the cutting.
