Default Chinese Pistachia dropping leaves in July!

I live in a dry, windy climate in California. I planted a this tree about 6 years ago, but have never pruned it. Now it is dropping it's leaves (most annoyingly into my pool) which it has never done. Can we prune it successfully this time of year?

How about some pics of the tree, healthy leaves and leaves that drop, where the tree is relative to the pool, closeup and distance.
