Default Cedar Tree dying

I have apprx. a 50' cedar tree in Massachusetts. The tree has always been in good health, but this spring when I went out to it the entire tree is brown(top to bottom). After scratching the bark of some branches, the tree is totally dry yet, we had plenty of snow this winter. A lot of branches are now stripped of foliage. Any idea or does it have a disease?
