Default Cat repellent for trees

I have a weeping cherry that is about 4 years old. My cat has done a number to its trunk. He's a scratching fool. Any ideas on how I can get my cat to quit scratching?? I thought about putting chicken wire around the trunk, didn't know if there were any better suggestions. He has also scratched up a maple tree that is only about 4 years old which has caused it to to have an unsightly gash/wound in its trunk. Any help would be appreciated!!

you can get an animal repellent spray and spray it on the trunk, or repellent granules to put around the trunk, also maybe take a good size branch of another tree and nail it to a flat board and spray catnip spray on it and place it away from your other trees, the cat will then be attracted to the piece of wood and not your living trees

My cat did the same to my apple tree, we just put up some chicken wire around the tree.

if the cat is only scratching for the bottom 16-18 inches, sheet metal around the tree or chicken wire should suffice., But provide a scratching post for him elsewhere.

A 90 gn projectile from my .243 moving @ 4000ft/sec. would do the job,, but if you probably like your cat so chicken wire would do the job and not cause airflow/ humidity problems as some gaurds can do
