Unhappy canary palms

We have just been told by the San Diego Gas&Electric Company in San Diego, That they are going to cut down our 50-75 year old canary palms all 4 of them..They are at least30-40 feet..They already have cut or I should say"butchered' completly one side because the are above the electic lines..They clear the lines now by at least 3-4 feet on thay street side..Yesterday the SDGE guy said They Gotta go>> What can we do? they are on our propeity they have been with this old historic school house since the early 1900's..Please advise a solution Thank you,

Ring and speak to some-one first. Get names, dates and times and ask for a "hold" especially since they have just been trimmed.

2nd, we need pictures, from across the street, up and down the street etc so we can see size and clearances.

Also, what voltage are the wires and what is the minimum distance for vegetation clearance?

We can help, but we need some facts first.

Does your place show up on Google Street view?

That link didn't work for me, [but I'm having trouble with Google Earth]

I think they are the ones near the corner, Avocado Rd, 2210 Fire mt, where the garbage truck is, they've been cleared that's for sure.

They may be on your property but SDG&E has a right-of-way.

The palms are slow growing, so either this has been going on a very long time, or the palms were transplanted mature or the wires just got put in.

Either way, the two cannot co-exist together like that. Unlike a tree that gets branches pruned off that do not regrow the palm puts out another set of fronds, into the wires.

What they do here to maximise the time for the fronds is cut the interfering ones (in your case half the friggin plam) back only half way, they stay green a while, then die, then take ages to get replaced with a new one ... the cycle is extended for pruning however it is very unsightly.

The only other option I could see for you Tamara is paying for the regular pruning of them or having the wires moved (fat chance of that).

In this thread ( Can this tree be saved? ) you can see how they prune trees so they dont have to continually return, you can also read how some think the wrong thing was done but frankly the right thing was done.

canary palms
The weather is absolutly beautiful down here in san diego, southern Califonia..WE are having 85 degree temperature on the beach with perfect off-shore winds aginst a shore of perfect surf. This is the time of year when the Santa Ana winds stir of quit a-few fires through-out California.. That is why the electric Company is tring so hard to remove my Trees..They were held responsible for there lines causing so much damage last year..Lots of dry trees blowing in a extremly hot conditions and causing sparks within the lines,so what are the going cost for these ancient canary's? 50 ft.X ?=----?
Thanks..time to sell TLC4U <tami>

Lightbulb Re: canary palms

Yes, the SD&E will top em and destroy.. My neighbor told me he used to hike up this mountain with his buddies 45 years ago to sit and eat thier lunch under these very historic trees! He now owns and operates a very successful Lanscaping business. He gave us some #'s. Just wanted to comferm with you out there in this Tree World.. So Help me figure out the price per foot or a canary 50 foot high times 4..$$ Money grows on trees for the picken in this case.. Thanks. TLC4U{tamara h.}

The value of a tree isn't a precise science.

It's worth what you get for it, no more or less.

I have seen ecologists reckon trees are worth $1/2million but never see their check books, fictitious value, based on theory not open market forces like auctioning your house.

Get what you can and move on in life, has to be dealt with or forever have half the head cut off to accommodate the wires, possibly at your cost.

The removal of them will be tricky, power wires and size of them, also the heads are imbalanced and would take 3 years+ to rebalance with fronds as they grow slow.

Just the way it is.
