I think my tree is a Japenese weeping maple. It was planted about 3 years ago and has done well until this spring. Only a small portion of it has developed leaves this year and the rest of it is bare limbs. Could this be from the dry year we had last year? I don't know if I should prune the non leaf bearing limbs or just let it go and hope for the best next spring? Thank you, ![]() ![]() |

Do not know what your weather is like where you live Ornamental weeping maples I think need a little protection from elements that are too harsh and should not be allowed to dry out Prune out the dead – do not let it dry out if you have hot summers, give it a feed and see how it goes Looks a bit dismal though and maybe the location is a little open - hard to tell |

I agree with Cruising Long, Japanese Maples do better with protection - from wind and sun. They need water most days, and varieties that are an aberration from normal growth -- like weeping forms, or those with highly dissected leaves -- need much more protection. Personally I would move the tree to a less exposed location, prune out the deadwood, and monitor the tree at least weekly, preferably every 2-3 days.
