Presumably a tree with corky bark, perhaps a cork tree? eg Amur Corktree (Phellodendron amurense)

Froglady

Brent gave you a good lead for non-Australian species.
but can you give us another clue with pic or description of the leaves?

is the tree growing in a park or other man made environment or is it a naturally occurring specimen maybe in the wild?

A reasonable species to consider from Australia is the more northern Erythrina vespertilio or coral tree. We call them bat's wing coral tree on account of the leaf shape resembling a flying bat. Another common name is corkwood. There are many members of the Erythrina group to look it up in wikipedia, only one or 2 Erythrina species are from northern Australia.

even old seed pods can help if you see then near the tree.

Yes, I agree to be some type of cork tree, I have 2 different species in my collection and one look identical without all that green fungi growing on it...!

Cheers
