Default Can anyone help with grape vine problem?

I know a grape vine is not a tree but I don't know where else to turn for help. I live in Los Angeles and planted this grape in a pot about nine months ago. It had fruit on it at the time.

Now the plant looks like a mess and I have no idea why. Can anyone venture a guess at to why it looks this way?

The new growth at the ends of the vine looks ok.

Thanks for any advice!

Robert

Do you feed the plant?
how often do you water it?
what do you water it with tap or tank water?
when was the plant put into that pot?
is the plant in full sun all summer?

Thanks for the reply!

I planted this vine (Flame Seedless) and another one (Perlette Seedless) back on August 11, 2010. At that time they were about six feet long and had about two nice bunches of grapes on them.

They went dormant in the winter and the new spring growth looked very healthy. There were many tiny bunches of grapes which made me think I was going to have a nice harvest. The tiny grapes seems to have fallen off (see photo).

I have not fed them since the planting.

They get sun from morning until about 4pm in the afternoon.

I water them about once every ten days with the hose (city water). The bark mulch keeps the soil from drying out.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again.

Grapes need regular feeding try bone meal or seaweed, what mulch did you use? if it was cypress the soil acidity could change too much for the vine, you also need to stop useing city water it is too hard for plants! get a small rainwater tank and use that. do you get frosts? if so wrap the pot in hessian or bubble wrap over winter to protect the roots.
Take pics and keep us informed

Thanks Garry!

The mulch I'm using is EarthGro Bark Nuggets made from "natural forest products." I'm not sure what that means.

The rainy season is over here in Los Angeles so I'll have to use city water until the next rains toward the end of the year. Thanks for that idea, though!

No problem with frosts here. The lowest temp in the winter is around 43 deg F.

I bought some bone meal today and will apply it tomorrow.

Thanks again for your help! I'll let you know what happens.

BTW, would it be harmful to give a little liquid chemical fertilizer (MiracleGro) to get things moving a little faster?

I believe the vine is diseased.

I believe it is a mildew or fungal disease.

I also believe that no pruning didn't help, vines should be pruned.

I think you should move toward a treatment.

I think you should add mychorrizal fungi to the soil along with trichoderma.

I think if I am wrong it doesn't matter as the vine will be better off anyway.

Here's a link to Aussie products, look for same in your area.

Remove dead, diseased and over 50% yellowed leaves, dispose of all and get rid of any dead leaves laying about.

Thank you Eric for the diagnosis. I will try to find the two items that you recommended.

BTW, I did prune the canes back to about two feet (I cut off the dead canes) during the dormant season.

Best wishes,

-Robert
